Gastroscopy can only be performed effectively if the horse has an empty stomach. We prefer to hospitalise horses the night before to ensure that they are fasted effectively; however, this can be done at home:
- Remove feed 16 hours prior to your appointment
- Remove water 2 hours before the appointment
- If your horse is bedded on straw or has a tendency to eat its bed then muzzle it overnight
If your horse is returning for a follow-up examination to assess the response to treatment then please keep it on the medication up until the day prior to your appointment.
The gastroscopy procedure is performed under light sedation and should only take a few minutes. Once your horse is sufficiently awake then it can go home.
